A solo exhibition by Anette Holt
4.10.22 – 29.10.22
“All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream.” Edgar Allen Poe
Anette Holt is a visual artist who works with a variety of photographic techniques to create her painterly pictures. With her images she aims to convey emotions rather than portraying the world that surrounds us in a representational or documentary way; Anette describes herself as an artist who simply happens to use a camera instead of a paint brush as a tool to produce her artwork.
The natural world – and trees in particular – are re-occurring themes in Anette’s work. Nature is a subject we can all relate to. The connection between man and nature has a long history in the arts and is universally understood. The Romantic movement of the 18th century in particular emphasised the role of nature for one’s mental and emotional health and was regarded as an inspiration.
We all know those moments when looking up into the branches of an ancient tree and our thoughts and feelings drift away. Sometimes these thoughts last only for the briefest of moments. Sometimes they wander aimlessly, following a certain path for a while and then unexpectedly changing direction – just like the birds that we see in the sky through the branches. And just like a dream, these thoughts and feelings can bring back memories, they may encourage us to reflect; they can be calming, inspirational, reassuring or unsettling, joyous, dark or full of hope. They can be anything we want them to be.
The boundaries between reality and imagination can become blurred in this dream-like state of mind – and so they do in Anette’s images.
The Dreamscape series explores this in-between space where illusion and the real world mix through the use of photographic techniques such as multiple exposure photography and composites. The viewer is invited to project their own thoughts, ideas, wishes, aspirations, memories and longings onto the images. Or just…. dream.
