I became addicted to Ceramics after I enrolled for a series of classes at the local art school. I was particularly interested in hand building, which has a quality all its own. The process is painstaking and absorbing and, particularly for the larger pots, can take several days, with the stoneware coils being added and joined until the required height is achieved.
In the building, the pot is scraped and shaped while it gradually develops its intended shape and thickness of wall. It is this rhythm that particularly appeals to me. working on several pots, related in form, at a time allows the pots to dry and firm up as I work.
It is the pottery of Ancient Korea and Sub-Saharan Africa, where I grew up, that most appeals to me. I aim to create an upward motion in my pots as they rise from a narrow base. Colour was initially understated and integral to the form, whether by additions of oxides and stains. The most recent pots however, have become more colourful, but I still eschew glazes, instead relying on the stains and underglazes being integrated with the pot form.
