COLOUR & SHAPE – ABSTRACTS FROM THE NORFOLK COAST

The Norfolk coast is a much-photographed location with its saltmarshes, mudflats, sand dunes, huge skies and quaint harbours such as Thornham.

All the images in the exhibition were created at Thornham Harbour with its instantly recognisable coal barn. However, my images are not the standard representational views, not simple depictions. Instead I offer you a playful exploration of shapes and colours, textures and light. Through my abstract images I create a variety of sensations and moods, taking you from hot summer days to a moonlit winter storm. But if you look, you can see the shapes of the coal barn, staithes and moored boats, along with the textures of the saltmarsh plants and the debris at the edge of the rising tide.

Viewing the images, you will sense the coastal light, with the changing sky and sea, reflections and shadows, and the eerie glow of the extreme spring flood tide.

This exhibition invites you to explore the natural and man-made elements of Thornham Harbour combined and re-presented in unique ways.  Each image can be made available in various sizes.  

The images were composed in the field using in-camera multiple exposures combining layers from that place on that day. I then used Lightroom to complete the creative process. I have been exploring the world of impressionist photography since 2016 when I was introduced to it by the inspiring pioneers of this approach Valda Bailey and Doug Chinnery. I have since been fortunate enough to gain my Royal Photographic Society Fellowship and win prizes in International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions with my impressionist and abstract images.

DEDICATION

This exhibition is dedicated to Melanie Venes, who died earlier this year. Melanie, an inspiring weaver and educator, was the first person to see potential in my early impressionist photographs. Through her encouragement I developed my creative skills, exhibited my work and have gained national and international recognition. Melanie lived at Thornham, and it was through her that Thornham Harbour became my favourite creative location and is now the subject of this exhibition. Thank you, Melanie.
