‘THROUGH COLOUR’

A collection of paintings, works on paper and Limited Edition Original Prints, initially inspired by place and experience. Dynamic interactions of colour and abstracted forms are ongoing characteristics of all the work.

“My professional practice as an artist has now spanned three decades. Following my early specialisation in Printmaking during my degree at Brighton University and post graduate studies at The Slade School of Art and Central St Martin’s in London, I have since become more focused on painting as my main practice, also creating works on paper, combining screen printing monotype processes with directly applied paint.

Process is intrinsic to my work. I build my paintings and works on paper layer by layer. This approach has been directly informed by my original specialism in printmaking. I think in layers – colour by colour, one layer a day. The layers are often semi-translucent, revealing and mapping the history of the making of the work. Initial ideas and inspiration for my work come from many sources – often places I have visited where I look for colour and forms that engage and excite the eye and have personal significance to me.

During my career I can see a shift from imagery and content that symbolised and explored aspects of my personal life, towards content that is more abstracted. Places, people and experiences still influence my work but I am increasingly engaged more deeply with exploring the qualities of paint and colour, and colour relationships, in ways that have become the content of the work itself – equal or maybe of more significance than the original inspiration.

I regularly exhibit in a number of galleries, work with art consultants and undertake commissions. My work is held in numerous public and corporate collections, including colleges within the University of Cambridge, Bank of England, Fujitsu, British Medical Association, Leicester Art Collection, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and many others”
